Background

Wang Changling was a famous Tang poet. Before he became an official, he lived in seclusion in the hills. Chang Jian passed the imperial exam in the same year as Wang, 727, and they were good friends. Later, after Wang had gone off to serve as an official, Chang Jian came to his old retreat, stayed the night there and wrote this poem. One account says the retreat was on Mount Shimen. The last two lines say the poet will become a hermit too, and they are usually read as also gently urging Wang to come back.

The poet作者

Chang Jian was a Tang poet who passed the imperial exam in 727. He held only a minor post, and because his career did not go well, he later lived for a long time as a hermit. His poems often describe forests, temples and the calm of a quiet life. The best known is "Written at the Meditation Hall behind Poshan Temple", whose lines about a winding path leading to a hidden place, and a meditation room deep in flowers and trees, are still often quoted today.

The mood意境

This poem is about a place with no one living in it. The stream is deep, and only a single cloud floats above, as if everything here were still waiting for Wang Changling to return. The loveliest part is the moon. It peeps out between the pines, and its clear light falls on the empty yard, as if it still remembered its old master and kept shining for him. The flower shadows lie quiet in the pavilion, and moss covers the herb garden. The master has been gone a long time, yet the place is as peaceful as ever. Staying the night here, the poet's own heart grows calm, and he says: I too will leave the world and go to live with the cranes in the western hills. The whole poem feels cool and clean. Reading it, you can almost smell the pines and the moss.
