Farewell

Wang Wei wrote this after seeing a friend off in the mountains. We do not know who the friend was or what year it was. The poem is also titled Farewell in the Mountains. The fourth line borrows from an old poem in the Songs of Chu, which says: the young lord wanders and does not return, while the spring grass grows thick. In some versions, next year in the third line reads year after year.
这首诗是王维在山中送走一位朋友后写的。朋友是谁、写在哪一年，都不清楚。题目一作《山中送别》。第四句借用了《楚辞·招隐士》里的句子：“王孙游兮不归，春草生兮萋萋。”意思是王孙出游不回来，春草长得很茂盛。第三句的“明年”，有的版本写作“年年”。
Wang Wei (701–761; some say 699–761) was a Tang poet and painter, called the Buddha of Poetry. From middle age he often lived in the hills of Zhongnan and Wangchuan, holding office while living almost like a hermit. His farewell poems are famous. He seldom says he is sad. Instead he hides deep feeling inside plain words.
王维（701—761，一说699—761），唐代诗人、画家，人称“诗佛”。他中年以后常住在终南山和辋川的山里，一边做官，一边过着隐居一样的生活。他写送别的诗很有名，常常不直接说难过，而是在平淡的话里藏着深深的感情。
The poem does not tell us what was said at parting or how many tears fell. It begins when the farewell is already over. The second line shows what comes after: it is dusk, the poet goes home and closes his gate. Closing a gate is an ordinary act, yet it makes us feel how lonely he is. The last two lines are what he thinks after closing the gate: next spring the grass will be green again, but will you come back? His friend has only just left, and he is already hoping for his return. The poem ends with a question and no answer, and the longing stays.
诗没有写送别时说了什么话、流了多少眼泪，一开头就是“送完了”。第二句写送完以后：天黑了，诗人回到家，关上柴门。关门是很平常的动作，却让人感到他一个人的冷清。后两句是他关门以后心里想的：明年春草又会变绿，朋友你还会回来吗？朋友刚走，他就已经盼着朋友回来了。诗用一个问题结尾，没有答案，想念却一直留在心里。
