Background

Li Bai grew up in Shu, today's Sichuan. Most people think he wrote this poem around 725, when he first left home and sailed east down the river. It was an autumn night. His boat set out near Mount Emei, passed Qingxi, and headed for Yuzhou and the Three Gorges. The moon over the mountain kept him company, until the mountains fell behind and the moon was gone too.

The mood意境

This poem is about one night of leaving home. In the first line the poet looks up: a half autumn moon hangs over Mount Emei. In the second he looks down: the moonlight lies on the river and flows with it, as if the moon is travelling with him. In the last two lines the boat goes farther and farther. The mountains hide the moon, and he cannot see it however much he wants to, so he goes on with his longing. The poem uses five place names in twenty-eight characters, yet it never feels crowded. Reading it feels like drifting downstream in the boat. Most people think "you" means the moon, some think it is a friend. Either way, it is love for the home he is leaving.
