The corpus titles it "Jie Pei Huan, Shu Ying". Common editions such as Three Hundred Song Lyrics title it "Shu Ying: Searching for Plum Blossoms in Vain"; Jie Pei Huan is another name for the Shu Ying tune. In the text, the corpus has the wrong river name in line eighteen because of a slip in machine conversion; it should be the Li River from the old song "Lord of the Xiang". A few old character forms in the corpus are written here in their usual modern forms.

Background

The title says he went looking for plum blossoms in winter and could not find them. Peng Yuanxun lived at the very end of the Southern Song. After the Song fell, he did not serve the new Yuan rulers. Many readers think the missing plum blossoms stand for his lost country and the good things that were gone. The lyric borrows many lines and images from Qu Yuan's old songs, which were about longing for something one can never reach. The year it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Peng Yuanxun, also called Xunwu, came from Luling, today's Ji'an in Jiangxi. His dates of birth and death are unknown. He wrote lyrics at the end of the Southern Song. After the Song fell he refused to take office, staying loyal to the old dynasty in his heart. Only a few of his lyrics survive, and they often tell of loneliness and grief after the fall of his country.

The mood意境

This lyric is about looking for plum blossoms, yet from start to finish no blossom appears. At the opening there is no boat on the river, the sweet herbs have withered, and the road is long and cold. It is like a man standing on a winter riverbank who can never get across. He says: wind or snow, I want only that one plum; the thousand trees of spring mean nothing to me. Yet all he sees is a lonely town, falling leaves and a river flowing away day and night. In the second stanza he hears a flute and thinks of drifting through the world with his friends. Nothing goes as hoped, and the dew on the weeds soaks his clothes. At last he hands his feelings to the white gulls, the pale moon and the little waves, and lets them drift away. The lyric is full of echoes of Qu Yuan's songs: the beauty, the sweet herbs, the jade pendant, the Li River. All are signs of longing for what cannot be reached. It reads cool and quiet, like an ink painting: pale, but very sad.
