Underlined words have notes: tap one. The Pinyin button below shows or hides all pinyin. 一 and 不 are marked with the tone you actually say.

In line fourteen the corpus has only three characters, as do the Qing court library copy of Shi Dazu's lyrics and the Anthology of Ci. Three Hundred Song Lyrics and the Imperial Anthology of Lyrics add zūn (a wine cup), which fits the tune pattern, and this page follows them.

Background

This lyric was written on a rainy autumn day. The poet looks out from a tower by the river and misses an old friend far away. When and where it was written, and who the friend was, are no longer known. It mentions the Huai hills, so the friend was probably somewhere along the Huai River. The lyric first paints the rainy autumn river, then the poet's own sorrow, and only at the end his longing for the friend.

The poet作者

Shi Dazu, also called Meixi, was a Southern Song lyric writer; his birth and death years are unknown. He failed the imperial exams several times and later became a clerk for the powerful minister Han Tuozhou. When Han fell, Shi was punished and sent into exile. His lyrics paint scenes in fine, lively detail. His most famous is "Shuang Shuang Yan", about a pair of swallows.

The mood意境

The first half is like someone standing in a tower watching the view. Autumn rain falls on the river, water winds round the sand, and the sounds of fishermen and the wheeling gulls break his thoughts of a poem. So he stops writing and just watches. Houses across the river appear and fade, and at dusk every home burns bamboo to cook, like a pale ink painting. The second half is about his feelings. He tells himself he is not old yet; with a little wine and a song, he can cheer up. But as soon as he looks into the distance, sorrow seems to hang all over the trees. Only at the end does he say what is really on his mind: his old friend is far away by the Huai River. He gazes and gazes, but not even a letter comes. The lyric moves from scene to sorrow, deeper and deeper.
