Background

Mount Shang is southeast of today's Shangluo in Shaanxi, on the main road southeast out of Chang'an. The poem shows the poet setting off from an inn very early in the morning as he passed Mount Shang. One view says it was written near the end of Emperor Xuanzong's Dazhong years, when Wen Tingyun left Chang'an to take a post in Xiangyang, in today's Hubei. The poem is in the middle school Chinese textbook.

The poet作者

Wen Tingyun (about 812–about 866), born Wen Qi, courtesy name Feiqing, was a late Tang poet and writer of ci. He was very gifted. It is said he could finish a long rhymed piece in the time it took to fold his hands eight times, so people called him Wen Eight-Folds. But he kept failing the exams and never did well in his career. His poems were as famous as Li Shangyin's, and the two were called Wen and Li. He was also a leading ci writer of the Huajian school.

The mood意境

"Rooster crows, thatched inn, moon; footprints, plank bridge, frost" are among the most famous lines in Chinese poetry. They are made only of nouns, without a single verb, yet they build a whole picture. It is not yet light. A rooster crows, and the moon hangs over the thatched inn. The frost on the bridge already shows footprints, so someone set out even earlier than the poet. The cold of rising early and the hardship of the road are all in there. Lines five and six show the fallen leaves and white flowers along the way. At the end the poet recalls last night's dream of Duling, with wild ducks and geese crowding the ponds, lively and warm. It is just the opposite of the cold road in front of him, and it makes his homesickness even stronger.
