The common text writes the character for "railing" in line 5 with an older form; the source uses the modern form. The meaning is the same. The source also keeps an old form of yú in that line, written in its usual simplified form here.

Background

This lyric shows a drunken outing after a farewell, and the feelings that come on waking. Its date can no longer be fixed. A Song dynasty notebook tells a story: in old age Zhou Bangyan lived in Qiantang and wrote this lyric in a dream. Later, during the Fang La uprising, what happened to him as he fled matched the lyric line by line. The story sounds like a legend and may not be true, but it shows the lyric was already famous in the Song.

The poet作者

Zhou Bangyan (1056–1121) was a Northern Song poet from Qiantang, today's Hangzhou. He knew music deeply and once ran the court's music office. He was strict about the rules of rhythm and sound. He liked to lay out a story from start to finish, with many turns along the way. Later readers saw him as the great master of the gentle, graceful style of ci.

The mood意境

This lyric reads like a diary from one evening to the next day. It opens at dusk outside the city. The road is long, the dust from the carts hangs in the air, and the setting sun seems unwilling to go, still caught on a corner of the city railings. Then he meets a lovely woman by chance. Someone urges him to drink, so he simply gets off his horse and stays, sipping slowly. The second stanza is fun. He got so drunk that he cannot remember how he went home or who helped him onto his horse. He wakes up already asleep in a chamber. A gust of wind rouses him. Still tipsy, he goes to look at the peonies, but finds the garden deep in fallen petals, and the east wind still blowing hard. Spring is leaving, and he feels sad. Yet in the end he says: let it go, I can be happy in my own little world. Inside this letting go there is a quiet sigh.
