The corpus text has 'befitting the Double Ninth' in line 3, and writes chén (sunk, deep) in line 8 with an old character also used as the surname Shen, which the machine conversion did not change. Most editions have 'making the most of the Double Ninth' in line 3. This page follows the common text.

Background

This lyric is about a Double Ninth banquet in the capital, Bianjing, today's Kaifeng in Henan. The 'golden palms' stand for the palace, which tells us the place was the capital. We no longer know the exact year. It is usually thought to be from Yan Jidao's later years. By then his family had long fallen on hard times and his own life had not gone well. Friends welcomed him warmly at the festival, but he still felt sad and lonely inside.

The poet作者

Yan Jidao (around 1038–around 1110), styled Shuyuan and known as Xiaoshan, was a ci writer of the Northern Song and the youngest son of the chief minister Yan Shu. He grew up rich, but after his father died the family declined. He was proud and would not flatter powerful people, so he only ever held small posts. His lyrics are mostly about the past and the pain of parting, full of true feeling. He and his father are called the Two Yans.

The mood意境

The first half opens on the capital in late autumn: dew turned to frost, clouds drifting after the geese, everything cold and clear. Then comes the lively banquet, with wine, singers and hosts as warm as people from home. In the second half he wears orchids and pins chrysanthemums in his hair, trying to bring back his wild young spirit. But the words 'take up my old wildness' show that this spirit is old now and takes effort to lift. So he wants to drown his sorrow in drink, and begs the singer not to sing a sad song. The harder he tries to be happy, the more his pain shows. The lyric goes deeper layer by layer, and only at the end do we see how much grief lies under the merriment.
