This follows the common text. The source's last line has "the emperor's favor"; the common text has "the emperor" (a Song word for the ruler). The meaning is close. The source also writes the water plant in the fourth-to-last line with the simplified character used for apple, a slip of machine conversion; the plant is meant.

Background

In his late forties Lu You served in the army at Nanzheng, today's Hanzhong in Shaanxi, near the front line against the Jin. There he lived a bold life of riding and shooting. Later he was dismissed from office more than once. This lyric is usually dated to the Chunxi years (1174–1189), when, out of office, he was living by Mirror Lake in his home town, Shanyin, today's Shaoxing. Thinking back on those days and looking at his life now, he wrote this lyric.

The poet作者

Lu You (1125–1210), who called himself Fangweng, was a great poet of the Southern Song. All his life he wanted to win back the north, which the Jin had taken, but he was never given an important role and was sent home several times. His poems often carry the anger of a man who cannot serve his country. On the surface this lyric is about a fisherman's easy life, but underneath lies that same sense of unfairness.

The mood意境

The first stanza looks back. Games under bright lamps, galloping and shooting: how bold it was! Then two words, "who remembers", break the scene: no one does. His old drinking friends have all become great lords, and he alone is a fisherman by the river. The contrast is sharp. The second stanza shows the fisherman's life: a boat eight feet long, a canopy of three panels, and all the mist and rain on the lake his own. It looks free and easy. The last two lines are the most striking. He Zhizhang's piece of Mirror Lake was a gift from the emperor. But Lu You says the lake has always belonged to people at leisure, and needs no one's gift. It sounds carefree, but it is stubborn and bitter too. On the surface is an easy life; beneath it is the sadness of a hero with nothing to do.
