Background

This lyric is about the Double Ninth Festival, the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The poet comes home for the festival. He thinks of the old customs of climbing hills and picking chrysanthemums, but his heart is full of autumn sorrow and homesickness. The lyric uses many old stories tied to the festival and to autumn: the Horse-Racing Terrace, Tao Yuanming picking chrysanthemums, Meng Jia losing his hat, and Zhang Han longing for the food of home. We no longer know the year it was written.

The poet作者

Pan Xibai lived at the end of the Southern Song. He came from Yongjia, today's Wenzhou in Zhejiang. He is usually said to have passed the top state exam in the Baoyou years under Emperor Lizong. Very few of his lyrics survive. This one is known because it was chosen for the Three Hundred Song Lyrics.

The mood意境

The first stanza opens with the bright customs of the festival: climbing high, picking chrysanthemums, the southern hills still green. But last night's wind and rain have changed his mood. Like Song Yu he grieves for autumn, and like Wei Jie he has grown thin. The second stanza is colder still. He wears the dogwood but has no heart for wine. With the sound of pounding washing stones, the cold creeps into his sleeves. The lotus has withered and the willows have yellowed. He forces himself to straighten his hat and remembers worrying at the ends of the earth, longing for home again and again in late autumn. The lyric is like a painting of autumn whose colours fade as you go, while the sadness grows deeper.
