Background

Fù què means going to the capital. One autumn, Xu Hun travelled to Chang'an. On the way he passed Tongguan, stayed at the post station, climbed its tower and wrote this poem on its wall. Tongguan, in today's Shaanxi, was the main gateway to Chang'an. Mount Hua lies to its south, and across the Yellow River to the north lie the Zhongtiao Mountains. We do not know the exact year of this trip.

The poet作者

Xu Hun (about 791–about 858) was a late Tang poet. He was very good at regulated verse with neat paired lines, and he loved writing about water and rain, so people joked that his thousand poems were all wet. He served as a local official and often wished to go home and live in retreat. The feeling in this poem, nearing the capital but dreaming of a quiet life, is common in his work.

The mood意境

The poem opens on an autumn evening: red leaves rustle, and the poet drinks a little wine at a roadside pavilion. It feels a bit lonely. The middle four lines are the best part. They show the grand view from the post tower at Tongguan: Mount Hua to the south, the Zhongtiao Mountains to the north, forests stretching away, and the Yellow River rushing to the sea. The clouds move, the rain moves, the river moves, and the scene is vast and far. The last two lines turn: tomorrow he reaches the capital and should be glad, yet he still dreams of fishing and cutting wood. It shows he is not very eager to be an official. His heart longs for the freedom of hills and rivers.
