The corpus writes the character for "husband" (xù) in an old variant form. Today the standard form is used.

Background

In the Tang dynasty, before the jinshi exam, candidates often sent their writings to famous people, hoping to be recommended. Just before his exam, Zhu Qingyu sent this poem to Zhang Ji. Zhang Ji was then an official in the Water Ministry. He was a well-known poet who liked to help young writers. On the surface the poem is about a bride. Underneath it asks: will my writing please the examiners? Zhang Ji answered with a poem praising him as a beauty from Yue who outshines all others. Zhu Qingyu later passed the exam.

The poet作者

Zhu Qingyu was a Tang poet from Yuezhou, around today's Shaoxing in Zhejiang. He was known by his courtesy name rather than his given name. He passed the jinshi exam in 826. Zhang Ji admired his poems, and this one is his most famous work.

The mood意境

The poem is like a little story. The morning after her wedding, the bride must greet her husband's parents. It is a nervous moment. Dressed and ready but unsure, she quietly asks her husband whether her eyebrows are painted in fashion. The words "softly asks" show she is shy and careful. The clever part is that the whole poem is a comparison. The bride is the poet himself, the parents-in-law are the examiners, the husband is Zhang Ji, and painting the eyebrows is writing. Instead of asking straight out, "Will I pass?", he asks gently through the bride. It is playful and polite at once.
