Background

Jiang Kui wrote a short preface to this ci. In 1196 he was drinking with his friend Zhang Gongfu (Zhang Zi) at the home of Zhang Dake, when they heard a cricket chirping inside the wall. Zhang Gongfu proposed that they each write about the cricket, for singers to perform. Zhang finished first, and his piece was lovely. Jiang Kui paced among the jasmine flowers, looked up at the autumn moon, and was suddenly filled with deep, sad thoughts. Soon he finished this one too. The preface also says that people in the capital called the cricket cù zhī and loved cricket fights; some paid two or three hundred thousand coins for a single cricket.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155–about 1221), also called the Daoist of White Stone, came from Poyang in today's Jiangxi. He was a Southern Song ci poet and a musician. He never held office all his life; he lived as a guest of friends who helped him. He knew music well and wrote his own tunes, and many of his ci are set to melodies he made himself. His style is cool and airy. He often paints deep sorrow with very light strokes, just as in this ci about a cricket.

The mood意境

This ci is about a cricket, yet it hardly describes the cricket at all. Instead it keeps showing the people who hear it. First comes the sad poet Yu Xin, then the doorway and the well, then a wife who cannot sleep and rises to weave. The second stanza moves from night rain at the west window and the sound of beaten cloth to a traveler at an inn and someone in a lonely palace. Each hears the chirping, and each has a private sorrow. Only the children by the fence, hunting crickets with lanterns, find it fun and know no grief. At the end, the poet says that if you set this sound to music, each note grows more bitter. The tiny insect song is like a thread that strings together all the lonely people in the world. Picture a cool autumn night: rain falling, a cricket singing, and many people lying awake.
