Background

Bogu was the courtesy name of Su Jian. When Su Shi was an official in Hangzhou, Su Jian worked under him, and the two became close friends. When Su Jian was going home to Wuzhong, the area around today's Suzhou, Su Shi wrote this lyric to see him off. Su Shi loved the scenery of Wuzhong too, and hoped one day to retire there. The lyric is usually dated after Su Shi's second term in Hangzhou, but the exact year is debated.

The poet作者

Su Shi (1037–1101), also called Dongpo, was a great Northern Song writer. He served in Hangzhou twice and built the Su Causeway across West Lake, so he loved the south deeply. He greatly admired Wang Wei, and said that in Wang Wei's poems there are paintings, and in his paintings there are poems. This lyric mentions Wang Wei's painting and verses to show his own wish to retire.

The mood意境

This is a farewell lyric, yet it feels light and friendly. It begins: for three years I have walked the road to Wuzhong in my dreams, and I wish I could send Lu Ji's dog Yellow Ear home with you. Then it is like friendly advice: when you take a boat on the Song River, do not scare the birds, because every bridge there is a place this old man has walked. Calling himself "this old man" shows Su Shi's humor. The second half is about himself. He looks at Wang Wei's painting, thinks of Wang Wei's poems, and has already agreed with heaven on a day to go home. It ends on a spring robe. It was sewn by someone dear, and it once got wet in the rain of West Lake. One old robe holds all his longing for family, for his friend, and for the south.
