Background

This lyric is about a traveler far from home who misses his home and his wife around the spring Earth God Day. On that day his wife puts down her sewing, as custom says. But he is alone in distant mountains, and the swallows flying back in pairs make him sadder still. Common editions such as Three Hundred Song Lyrics name the poet as Huang Gongshao of the late Song. But older collections give no author, and Huang Gongshao's own collection does not include it, so scholars such as Tang Guizhang think it is by an unknown writer. We do not know when it was written; one view is that it dates from after the fall of the Song.

05

The poet作者

Huang Gongshao, courtesy name Zhiweng, came from Shaowu in today's Fujian. He passed the top civil exam near the end of the Song. After the Song fell, he refused to serve the new Yuan rulers and lived in retirement. He compiled a book on the sounds of characters. His dates of birth and death are not known.

06

The mood意境

This lyric keeps setting "there is" against "there is no one". The swallows come in pairs, but he is alone. At home someone puts down her sewing, but here his torn robe has no one to mend it. The most moving picture is the worn spring robe: no one to stitch it, only tear stains on it, drop by drop, line by line. The last three lines repeat "no one" three times: flowers with no one to wear them, wine with no one to urge him, drunk with no one to care. The words are plain, like talking to himself, yet they carry loneliness right to the bone. You can almost see a man at sunset on a grassy bank, holding his horse, drinking in silence.
