How to read it读音

曲qū: Here qū means a deep, winding corner, so it is read qū, not qǔ as in "song". Some readers take it as "a song of the jade terrace", which would be read qǔ.这里的“曲”是“深处、弯弯曲曲的地方”，读 qū，不是“歌曲”的 qǔ。也有人理解成“瑶台的曲子”，那就读 qǔ。

Background创作背景

No one knows for sure when this lyric was written or for whom. A Song dynasty story says that when Su Shi was an official in Hangzhou, a singing girl named Xiulan came late to a party, and he wrote this lyric for her. But even in the Song dynasty, people said the story could not be trusted. Today it is usually read as using a lonely, beautiful woman and a late-blooming pomegranate flower to carry the poet's own feelings.

这首词写在什么时候、为谁写的，没有确切的说法。宋代有一个故事说，苏轼在杭州做官时，有一位叫秀兰的歌女参加宴会迟到了，苏轼为她写了这首词。但宋代就有人指出这个故事不可信。现在一般认为，这首词借一位孤独美丽的女子和晚开的石榴花，寄托作者自己的心情。

The poet作者

Su Shi (1037–1101), also called Dongpo, was a great Northern Song writer. He was good at poems, lyrics, essays, calligraphy and painting. His lyrics are often bold and broad, but some, like this one, are soft and delicate. He was sent away from court several times, and knew the loneliness of not being understood.

苏轼（1037—1101），号东坡居士，北宋大文学家，诗、词、文章、书法、绘画样样都好。他的词常常豪放开阔，但也有像这首一样细腻柔美的作品。他一生几次被贬官，心里有不少不被理解的孤独。

The mood意境

The first half is like a slow-motion film. On a summer noon, swallows fly and tree shadows move. In the house, a woman who has just bathed holds a white fan and slowly falls asleep. Suddenly it seems someone pushes the door, and she wakes from a sweet dream. But it is only the wind in the bamboo. This small letdown shows that she is waiting for someone and feels lonely. The second half is about the pomegranate flower. Other flowers bloomed and fell long ago; only it blooms late, keeping a lonely person company. Yet it too will be blown away by the autumn wind. At the end, the woman and the flower shed tears together. The flower is the woman, and the woman is the flower: beautiful, yet no one treasures them. Many readers feel Su Shi's own loneliness of not being understood is in it too.

上半首像一部慢镜头：夏天的中午，燕子飞，树影移，屋里一个刚洗完澡的女子拿着白扇子，慢慢睡着了。忽然好像有人推门，她从美梦里醒来，结果只是风吹竹子。这一点小小的失望，写出了她在等人，心里很孤单。下半首写石榴花。别的花早就开过、落了，只有它晚开，陪着孤独的人。可是它也会被秋风吹落。最后写人和花一起落泪。花就是人，人就是花，美丽却没人懂得珍惜。很多人认为，这里也有苏轼自己不被理解的心情。
