Background

When Li Bai served at court in Chang'an as a writer for the emperor, one spring Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei were admiring peonies by the Chenxiang Pavilion in the Xingqing Palace. The emperor told Li Bai to write new song lyrics on the spot, and he wrote three Qingping Songs. The story comes from Tang notebooks and is usually placed in the early Tianbao years. A later legend says someone used the mention of Zhao Feiyan in the second song to claim Li Bai was mocking Yang Guifei, but this is only a legend.

The poet作者

Li Bai (701–762) was a great Tang poet, called the Immortal of Poetry. His poems are full of imagination and flow naturally. He spent about two years at the court in Chang'an, writing many poems for the emperor, and these three Qingping Songs are the most famous. Later he left Chang'an and went on wandering.

The mood意境

On the surface this poem is about a flower, but it is really about a person. The first line is a dewy red peony, fresh and fragrant: that is how Yang Guifei looks. The second line speaks of the goddess of Mount Wu. However lovely, she lived only in a dream, and the king of Chu grieved in vain because he could never see her. The beauty here is real. The last two lines compare her with Zhao Feiyan, the loveliest woman of the Han palace: even Feiyan needed fresh makeup to look her best. The hidden meaning is that this lady is beautiful without any. Step by step, the poet raises his praise of the flower and the lady as high as it can go.
