Background

After years of war and wandering, Du Fu came to Chengdu and built a thatched cottage by Washing Flower Creek. At last his life was settled. It is usually said that in the spring of 761 he walked alone along the river enjoying the flowers, and wrote seven quatrains along the way. This is the sixth. Huang Siniang was his neighbor, and the flowers by her house were especially fine.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, called the Sage of Poetry. Most of his poems are about war and the suffering of ordinary people, and they feel heavy. His few years at the thatched cottage in Chengdu were a rare peaceful time in his life, so he wrote many light, cheerful little poems then.

The mood意境

This poem is like a lively spring painting. First look at the path: flowers on both sides. Then the branches: thousands of blossoms bending them low. Then the picture starts to move. Butterflies flit around the flowers and do not want to leave. Orioles sing freely in the trees. There is color, movement and sound. The repeated words, "thousands upon thousands", "again and again", "qià qià", make it bounce like a nursery rhyme. Du Fu was usually full of worry, but this time he was in a wonderful mood, and reading it makes us happy too.
