Background

Jiang Kui wrote a short preface to this lyric. He says he once lived in Wuling, today's Changde in Hunan, and often rowed with friends into the lotus to drink. Later, in Wuxing, today's Huzhou in Zhejiang, he often wandered among lotus again. He also went boating at night on West Lake, and the view was wonderful. He put these memories of lotus together in this lyric. Sources differ on the exact year.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155 to about 1221), also called the Daoist of White Stone, was a Southern Song ci poet and a musician who wrote his own tunes. He never held office, lived with the help of friends, and moved from place to place. His lyrics are cool and airy, and he often writes flowers as if they had souls.

The mood意境

This lyric is about lotus, yet it hardly ever names the flower. The poet turns the lotus into a group of lovely ladies. Water is their jade, wind is their skirt, their color is a flush after wine, they smile as they sway, and their scent flies into his poem. In the second half evening falls. The leaves stand like green umbrellas, as if waiting for someone dear and unwilling to leave. The poet worries that when the autumn wind comes, the petals will fall like dancing dresses. At the end the willows and old fish seem to ask him to stay, but he has walked home along the sandy shore many times already. The whole lyric is lovely and light, a little lonely, like a cool ink painting.
