Background

In his later years Wang Wei had a country house with gardens at Wangchuan, in Lantian County near Chang'an. There were twenty lovely spots there. He and his friend Pei Di each wrote a short poem for every spot, and the poems were gathered as the Wangchuan Collection. Lu Zhai, the Deer Enclosure, was one of the spots. The second character of the title is read zhài here. It means a fence made of wood, perhaps a place for keeping deer. The poem shows the mountain woods near the Deer Enclosure at dusk.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701–761; some say 699–761) was a Tang poet and also a painter. He was a Buddhist and is often called the Buddha of Poetry. The Song writer Su Shi said there are paintings in his poems and poems in his paintings. In his later years he often stayed at Wangchuan and loved writing about quiet hills and streams. This poem is a fine example.

The mood意境

The first line says the mountain is empty, with no one in sight. The second line says we hear voices. There is sound but no person, so the mountain feels even emptier and quieter. It is like a very quiet classroom: when someone coughs, the quiet feels even deeper. The last two lines are about light. The low evening sun slants into the deep woods and lands on the moss. The woods are dark, and this small patch of light makes them feel even darker and cooler. In just twenty characters there is sound and light, like a quiet painting.
