In the source text, line four uses an old variant form of the character dì, and line six ends with "wants to go home" instead of "grows fewer". This page follows the common text of Three Hundred Tang Poems.

Background

This poem describes blossoms falling at the end of spring, and uses them to speak of the poet's own life. It is usually thought to be from a time when Li Shangyin's career had stalled and he was living idle at home. One view places it in the Huichang years of Emperor Wuzong; the exact year is debated. After the guests had left, he stood alone looking at the fallen petals and wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813 to about 858) was a great poet of the late Tang, named together with Du Mu. He was very gifted but never succeeded in his career, caught between two quarrelling groups at court. When he wrote about things in nature, he often hid his own feelings inside them, so his poems are quiet and deep. On the surface this poem is about flowers; underneath, it is about the sadness of his own hopes coming to nothing.

The mood意境

The first line is unusual: it starts with the guests leaving. Only when the party is over does the poet have time to notice the falling petals, and to feel how empty it is. Then come the flowers: flying in the little garden, drifting along the path, floating toward the distant sunset. The blossoms are falling and the sun is setting too, a picture both beautiful and sad. The last four lines are about his heart. He cannot sweep the petals away and wishes the flowers would stay, but they grow fewer and fewer. In the end their heart is gone with the spring, and only tears remain. His pity for the flowers is also pity for himself: he had fine hopes, but like the falling blossoms, no one cared for them.
