In line 1 the source text has zhū meaning "red" (a red curtain); common editions such as Three Hundred Song Lyrics have zhū meaning "pearl" (a beaded curtain), used here. The source text writes the first character of line 10 as shěn, a slip from machine conversion. The word is chén shuǐ, agarwood incense, written today with the character for chén. It is corrected here.

Background

As a young man, Zhang Yuangan lived in Bianjing, the Northern Song capital, and had a lively, happy life. In 1127 the Jin army took Bianjing and the Northern Song fell. This is known as the Jingkang Incident. He later went south and spent his life moving from place to place. This lyric is about spring sorrow. It recalls days in the capital spent with a loved one. One view says that on the surface it is about love, but it also carries longing for the lost old capital. The exact date is not known.

The poet作者

Zhang Yuangan (1091–c. 1161), courtesy name Zhongzong, came from Yongfu in Fujian and lived as the Northern Song gave way to the Southern Song. After the north fell, he firmly called for fighting the Jin and opposed making peace. He once wrote a farewell lyric for Hu Quan, a minister banished for wanting war, and was struck from the rolls of officials for it. His early lyrics are soft and graceful; his later ones often mourn his country's suffering with passion.

The mood意境

The lyric has three parts. It walks from the present back to the past, then returns to the present. The first part is the spring in front of him: the rain has stopped, willows sway, peonies bloom, but the east wind knocks down the tender buds. He cannot be bothered to light incense, he is sick from wine, and though spring is lovely he has no spirit for it. The second part leaps back to the capital of his youth: riding horses, sharing a carriage, walking hand in hand in the gardens, a date at the Lantern Festival. So lively. Then the line "How could I have believed I would end up drifting" breaks the sweet dream. The third part comes back to his loneliness now. The scent on his robe has faded, the music has stopped. Spring is the same as before, but he can never go back. At the end he says only being drunk lets him forget for a while. The happier the memories, the sadder his loneliness feels.
