Background

Jiang Kui wrote both the music and the words of this lyric. In a short preface he says he loved what Huan Wen of the Eastern Jin said on seeing willows he had planted long ago: "If even trees age like this, how can people bear it?" The lyric is usually dated to around 1191, when Jiang Kui left Hefei and said goodbye to a woman he loved there. It uses the willow to speak of parting, since in old China the willow was the tree of farewells.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155–about 1221) was a Southern Song poet and musician. He never held office and lived with the help of friends. He composed his own tunes, created many new lyric patterns, and left music written down. As a young man he loved a woman in Hefei, and many of his later lyrics remember her.

The mood意境

The first stanza begins with willow down. It has all blown away, green shade fills every doorway, and far-off sails drift about. All of this calls up parting. The poet asks: who has seen more partings than the willow by the pavilion? If it had feelings, it would not stay so green. He blames the willow for having no heart, but really he is saying his own heart feels too much. The second stanza comes after he leaves. Looking back, he cannot see the city, only tangled hills blocking his view. He remembers her words: "Come back soon, so I am not left with no one." At the end he says that even the sharpest scissors could not cut his sorrow. The sorrow is like willow threads, one after another, too many to count.
