Background

Du Fu wrote this poem in the spring of 761. After years of running from war, he had finally built a thatched cottage by the Huanhua Stream on the west side of Chengdu, and his life was settled for a while. Under the title, Du Fu added his own note: glad that Magistrate Cui came to visit. Mingfu was a polite word for a county magistrate. One account says Magistrate Cui was a relative on Du Fu's mother's side.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, called the Sage of Poetry. Many of his poems tell of war and the suffering of ordinary people, and they feel heavy. But in the years at his Chengdu cottage he also wrote light, warm poems about flowers, neighbours and friends. A Guest Arrives is one of them.

The mood意境

The first two lines show spring water all around the cottage, and only gulls come by each day. Hardly anyone visits, and the host is a little lonely. Lines three and four suddenly grow lively. The flower path has never been swept for a guest, and the gate opens for the first time today, for you. The words only today show how happy the host is. Lines five and six are a shy apology. The market is far, so there is little food; the family is poor, so there is only old wine. The last two lines are the liveliest. The host asks the guest whether to invite the old man next door, and then calls him over the fence. The whole poem is like a little home video: plain, honest and full of warmth.
