Background

The original title is "Four Quatrains"; this is the third. After the An Lushan Rebellion, Du Fu lived in his thatched cottage in Chengdu. Later an army revolt broke out in Chengdu, and he left the cottage and wandered elsewhere. In 764 his good friend Yan Wu came back to govern Chengdu, and Du Fu returned to the cottage too. The fighting was dying down, and it was spring. In high spirits, he looked at the scenery around the cottage and wrote these poems.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, called the Sage of Poetry. Most of his poems are about war and the suffering of ordinary people, and they feel heavy. The years at his cottage in Chengdu were a rare time of peace in his life, so he wrote many light, bright little poems then. This is the most famous of them.

The mood意境

This poem is like four pictures put side by side. The first line has sound and colour: yellow orioles, green willows. The second looks up: white egrets in a row, flying into the blue. The third looks far off: the window is a frame holding the snowy western mountains. The fourth looks out the door: boats from Eastern Wu are moored there. In four lines we see near and far, high and low. Each pair of lines also matches neatly: "two" with "one line", "a thousand years" with "ten thousand li". A thousand years is a long time; ten thousand li is a long way. That boats can come from so far also shows the war has calmed and the roads are open again, and the poet's heart opens up with them.
