Background

In 764, after a time of wandering, Du Fu returned to his Thatched Cottage in Chengdu, the simple house with a straw roof where he lived. This poem is usually dated to that spring. After war and years on the move, he finally had a calmer stretch of life, and felt more at ease. He wrote two poems called Quatrain, and this is the first. A quatrain is a poem of just four lines.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, often called the Sage of Poetry. Many of his poems are about war and the suffering of ordinary people, and they feel heavy to read. The few years at the Thatched Cottage in Chengdu were one of the calmest times of his life. Then he wrote many bright little poems about flowers, birds and spring.

The mood意境

This poem is like four small pictures of spring. The first is a wide view: under the spring sun, the river and hills look lovely. The second is a smell: the spring breeze brings the scent of flowers and grass. The third is full of motion: the earth has gone soft, and swallows dart about carrying mud for their nests. The fourth is still: the sand is warm, and mandarin ducks sleep on it. There is far and near, moving and still, color and scent. As you read, you feel you are standing by the river in spring, warm all over.
