In the corpus, line 2 says the plants have withered. Most common editions say the grass has not yet withered, meaning that in the south the plants stay green even in late autumn.

Background

When young, Du Mu worked for some years in Yangzhou, in the office of the regional governor. Han Chuo was his colleague there, a judge who helped the governor with official business. Later Du Mu left Yangzhou. One autumn, missing his old friend and the bright life of the city, he wrote this poem and sent it to Han Chuo. Sources differ on the exact year.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803 to about 852) was a late Tang poet, named with Li Shangyin as the Little Li and Du. His years in Yangzhou were carefree, and he wrote many poems about the city, such as the line about waking from a ten-year dream of Yangzhou. His quatrains are fresh and graceful, and readers love them.

The mood意境

The first two lines picture the south from far away. Green hills come and go in the haze, and the river winds into the distance. The north is already cold, but in the south the plants are still green in late autumn. We can feel the poet missing the south. The last two lines turn to his friend: the moon shines on the Twenty-Four Bridges, and on such a lovely night, where are you playing the flute? The tone is light, like a friend teasing a friend, with a touch of envy and longing. Moonlight, little bridges and the sound of a flute make a cool, gentle picture. One reading is enough to remember a moonlit night in Yangzhou.
