Background

This poem is about spring in Jiangnan, the land south of the lower Yangtze River. In spring it is full of red flowers and green willows, and it rains a lot. Du Mu served as an official in this region and travelled there for years. We no longer know the exact year he wrote the poem. The Southern Dynasties it mentions had their capital at today's Nanjing. Their emperors loved Buddhism and built huge numbers of temples, and in Du Mu's time many still stood in the rain.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803–852) was a poet of the late Tang. His poems are fresh and bright, and he was best at seven-character quatrains. With a few strokes he could paint a whole scene. People pair him with Li Shangyin as the "Little Li and Du".

The mood意境

The first two lines are a big sunny painting. Across all of Jiangnan birds sing and flowers bloom. There are villages by the water, towns by the hills, and wine-shop flags in the wind. Then the scene changes to a misty rainy day. So many old temples, their towers half hidden in the rain. The Southern Dynasties were long gone, but the temples remained. There is a soft sigh in it: the glory has passed, and only the beautiful scenery is left. A writer in the Ming dynasty said "a thousand li" was too far to hear or see, and it should be "ten li". Others answered that the poem paints spring over all of Jiangnan, so "a thousand li" shows how vast it is.
