Background

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. People make zongzi, race dragon boats and hang mugwort, and legend says this is all to remember Qu Yuan. In this ci, Liu Kezhuang first describes the lively customs of the day, then turns to Qu Yuan, and jokes about the folk idea that Qu Yuan waits under the water for zongzi. He calls himself old, so it was written later in his life, but the exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Liu Kezhuang (1187–1269), also called Houcun, came from Putian in Fujian. He was a major poet and ci writer of the late Southern Song. He was honest and dared to speak the truth, and lost his posts several times because of it. His ci follow Xin Qiji; he liked to argue a point in a ci, in words that are witty yet bitter. This ci is a good example.

06

The mood意境

The first stanza is like a painting of festival customs: red pomegranate flowers, a curtain rolled up, children comparing their hairpin charms and mugwort tigers, everyone off to watch the dragon boats. But the poet says he is too old to join in. He only watches the hard rain on the stream and the leaping waves, so a little loneliness shows through the noise. The second stanza turns to Qu Yuan. He wore orchids and had a pure heart, yet later people say his soul drools for zongzi under the water and fears the dragons will steal them. The poet feels this belittles Qu Yuan. At the end he thinks: Qu Yuan suffered so much because he saw too clearly; had he died drunk, he would have suffered less. It sounds like a joke, but it is full of sympathy for honest people who suffer in the world, and hides the poet's own bitterness too.
