Background

This poem shows a general hunting near Chang'an. The season seems to be late winter or early spring: the grass is dry and the snow has just melted. Weicheng, Xinfeng and Xiliu were all places around Chang'an. It is usually thought to be an early work of Wang Wei, but the year and the general's name are not known for sure. It is the most famous Tang five-character regulated poem about hunting.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (about 701 to 761) was a great Tang poet and painter, and also skilled in music. People call him the Buddha of Poetry. He is best known for calm, beautiful poems about hills, rivers and farms. The Song writer Su Shi said his poems held pictures. But this poem is bold and strong, showing that as a young man he also had a heroic spirit.

The mood意境

This poem is like a fast hunting film. The first line lets you hear it before you see it: the wind and the twang of bows. The general has not appeared yet, but the power is already there. He enters in the second line. Lines three and four are clever. The grass is dry, so rabbits and foxes cannot hide, and the hawk's eyes seem sharper. The snow has melted, the ground is firm, and the horses run lighter. Then, in a blink, they race past Xinfeng and back to camp, amazingly fast. At the end the camera slows down. The general looks back at where he shot the eagle and sees only evening clouds spread flat for a thousand miles. The faster and busier the start, the quieter and wider the ending, leaving you to admire the general's skill and ease.
