Background

This poem is about the little bee. The exact year it was written is not known. Luo Yin lived at the end of the Tang, a time of great disorder. Ordinary people worked hard, but others often took what they produced. Many readers think the poet uses the bee to show sympathy for people who work hard but do not get to enjoy the results, and to mock those who take without working.

The poet作者

Luo Yin (833–910) was a poet at the end of the Tang. He was very gifted, yet he failed the top civil service exam more than ten times. His poems often mock the unfairness he saw in society. He wrote plainly and directly, and quite a few of his lines became everyday sayings.

The mood意境

The first two lines show how far and wide the bees fly: on flat land and on mountain tops, wherever there are flowers, there they are. It is as if all of spring's beauty belongs to them. The third line turns: flower by flower they gather, and at last they make honey. The last line asks "for whom?" twice, and it touches the heart. The bees work so hard, but most of the sweet honey is taken by others. The poem preaches nothing. It just watches the bees and asks a question, and that makes us think of people who work quietly for others. After reading it, we may value other people's hard work a little more.
