Background

In 1276 the Yuan army took Lin'an (today's Hangzhou), the Southern Song capital, and a few years later the Southern Song fell. Zhang Yan came from a noble family of the Southern Song. When the country fell, his family was ruined too. He wrote this lyric after the fall, when he visited West Lake again in late spring. The scenery was still there, but the old splendor and old friends were gone. His heart was full of grief for the lost country.

The poet作者

Zhang Yan (1248–about 1320), courtesy name Shuxia, pen name Yutian, was a lyric poet at the end of the Southern Song. He descended from the famous general Zhang Jun and grew up rich. After the Song fell he wandered from place to place and lived in hardship. His lyrics are clear and graceful and often carry the pain of a lost country. He also wrote a book on how to write lyrics, called Ci Yuan.

The mood意境

The first stanza shows West Lake in late spring. The leaves are thick, orioles nest, willow fluff floats on the water, and boats come home at sunset. It still looks lovely. But the poet sighs at once: how many more visits are left? To see flowers again he must wait a year. He begs the spring wind to stay with the roses a little longer. Really he cannot bear to let spring go, or the past. At Xiling Bridge there is only green and a streak of mist, cold and empty. The second stanza says everything has changed. No one knows where the swallows went. Busy places are covered with moss and weeds. Even the carefree gulls are sad. In the end he simply shuts the gates, drinks, and sleeps. He will not open the curtain, because he is afraid to see falling petals and hear the cuckoo. The falling petals mean spring is leaving. The cuckoo means the country is lost. The word "afraid" holds a pain he cannot say out loud.
