更gēng: Read gēng here: a night watch. In old times the night was split into five watches.更：这里读 gēng，指古代夜里报时的“更”，一夜分五更。
曲qū: Read qū here, meaning a small winding lane, not a song.曲：这里读 qū，意思是弯弯的小巷，不是歌曲。
槛jiàn: Read jiàn here, meaning a railing. When read kǎn it means a doorsill.槛：这里读 jiàn，意思是栏杆。读 kǎn 时是门槛。

Background创作背景

This lyric is about a love from the past. The first stanza remembers walking late at night down a quiet lane and meeting the woman he loved in a courtyard with a bamboo railing and a lit window. The second stanza tells how they were forced apart, and how the poet spends the night alone in a bleak inn, still longing for her. There is no preface, so we do not know the year or who the woman was. The name "Qiuniang" suggests she was a singing girl.

这首词写一段旧日的爱情。上阕回忆当年深夜走进幽静的小巷，在竹栏灯窗的庭院里见到心爱的女子；下阕写两人被迫分开，词人独自在荒凉的旅馆里过夜，思念不断。词前没有小序，具体写于哪一年、那位女子是谁，现在都不清楚。从“秋娘”这个称呼看，她应该是一位歌女。

The poet作者

Zhou Bangyan (1056–1121), also called Meicheng or Qingzhen, came from Qiantang, today's Hangzhou. He was a Northern Song lyric poet. He knew music deeply, worked at the court's music office, the Dasheng Bureau, and even wrote new tunes himself. His lyrics follow strict patterns and use beautiful words. Later readers saw him as the master who brought the gentle style of ci to its peak.

周邦彦（1056—1121），字美成，号清真居士，钱塘（今浙江杭州）人，北宋词人。他精通音乐，曾在朝廷主管音乐的机构大晟府做官，还自己创作新曲调。他的词讲究格律，用字精美，被后人看作婉约词的集大成者。

The mood意境

This lyric is like a short film. The camera opens on the night: watch drums sound, dew settles the dust, the lane is quiet and the moon is dim. Slowly it moves closer: a bamboo railing, a lit window. This is her home. They meet with smiles. She is as lovely as a jade tree or morning clouds, with eyes like flowing water, someone seldom seen in a lifetime. The second stanza begins with a sigh: before, he had only seen her in a picture; who knew he would really reach her fairyland? But the good time did not last, and a sudden wind blew them apart. Then the camera cuts to now: a bleak inn, gates shut one after another, autumn insects sighing by a broken wall. From warm and bright to cold and lonely, the contrast is very strong. The last line says longing is like a thin thread that will not snap even across a thousand hills and rivers. The feeling lingers long after.
