This is the text in the collection Three Hundred Song Ci. One old character for yú ("left over") is written in today's standard form. Versions in some other books differ in a few words: "drunk among the flowers" reads "drunk by the lake", "the wine stall" reads "the wine house", "hair piled like clouds" reads "hair at the temples like clouds", and "send" is a different word with the same meaning.

Background

According to Zhou Mi's Song book Old Tales of Wulin, during the Chunxi years of the Southern Song, the retired Emperor Gaozong was touring West Lake. On a screen in a wine shop he saw this lyric and liked it. He asked who wrote it, and learned it was Yu Guobao, a student at the Imperial Academy. Gaozong felt the original last line, "tomorrow I will bring the leftover wine again", sounded a bit shabby. He changed it to "tomorrow, still a little drunk, I will come again", and that same day gave Yu Guobao the right to become an official. The lyric shows how lively a spring outing at West Lake was in the Southern Song.

The poet作者

Yu Guobao lived in the Southern Song; the years of his birth and death are not known. At the time he was a student at the Imperial Academy, the highest school in the land. Very little of his writing survives. He is known mainly for this lyric and the story of Emperor Gaozong changing its last line.

The mood意境

This lyric is like a short film of a spring outing. The first stanza follows a horse that knows the way. Every day there are flowers and wine, and the horse even neighs proudly as it passes the wine shop. Music drifts through the scent of red apricot blossoms, and swings fly under green willows. We get sound, color and smell all at once. The second stanza turns the camera to the crowds. A warm wind blows for miles, and the women wear so many flowers that their hair tips sideways. At evening the painted boats "carry spring home", as if spring itself could be loaded onto a boat. The joy not yet used up is left to the lake and its mist. Last, the poet says he will come back tomorrow, still a little drunk, to look for ornaments dropped on the road. His love for spring at West Lake comes across as light and playful.
