Some versions read nóng rú jiǔ (as strong as wine) instead of nóng yú jiǔ (stronger than wine). The meaning is the same: the wish to go home is as strong as wine.

Background

We do not know exactly when or where this poem was written. From the poem itself, it is a cold winter night. The poet is far from home, cannot sleep, and misses home. One view says Wang Zao wrote it when things were going badly for him as an official, and the noisy crows may hint at petty people at court. Who wrote it is also debated. One view says it was Su Guo, the son of Su Shi, but most anthologies give it to Wang Zao.

The poet作者

Wang Zao (1079–1154) came from Dexing in today's Jiangxi. He was a writer at the end of the Northern Song and the start of the Southern Song. He was best at a kind of prose built on matched pairs of phrases, and he wrote many of the court's official orders in the early Southern Song. Very few of his song lyrics survive, and this one is the best known.

The mood意境

The first half is a cold, quiet night scene: a thin new moon, a chilly night, a still river, and the Big Dipper hanging low. The poet cannot sleep. He gets up and scratches his head, and sees the plum tree's shadow on the window, thin and bony. The word thin describes the shadow, but it also hints at the lonely man. In the second half he says that on such a fine frosty night he should be drinking with friends, but no one is there. At the end he asks: do you know? After the crows have cawed, my wish to go home is stronger than wine. Wine makes you drunker the more you drink, and homesickness grows deeper the more you think. Picture a man at a cold window, looking at the moon, wanting only to go home.
