How to read it读音

欹qī: It reads qī and means to lean. The corpus writes it with a variant character that has the same sound.欹：读 qī，意思是斜靠。原始文本写作异体字“敧”，读音相同。
更gēng: In sān gēng it reads gēng, a watch of the night, not gèng.三更：读 gēng，是古代夜里的计时单位，不读 gèng。
几jǐ: In jǐ shí it reads jǐ, meaning when.几时：读 jǐ，意思是什么时候。

Background创作背景

Su Shi wrote a short preface to this lyric. When he was seven, he met an old nun named Zhu in Meizhou, who was ninety. When she was young, she had gone with her teacher into the palace of Meng Chang, ruler of the Later Shu kingdom. One very hot night, Meng Chang and Lady Huarui cooled off by the Mohe Pond, and he wrote a song. The nun remembered it all. Forty years later, the nun was long dead, and Su Shi remembered only the first two lines. So he finished the song to the tune Dong Xian Ge. It is usually dated to 1082, when Su Shi lived in Huangzhou.

苏轼在这首词前写了一段小序。他说七岁时在眉州见过一位姓朱的老尼姑，九十岁了。她年轻时随师父进过五代后蜀国君孟昶的宫中。一个大热天的夜里，孟昶和花蕊夫人在摩诃池上乘凉，写了一首词，老尼姑都记得。四十年后，老尼姑早已去世，苏轼只记得开头两句，就按《洞仙歌》的调子把它补写完整。一般认为这首词写于元丰五年（1082年）苏轼在黄州的时候。

The poet作者

Su Shi (1037–1101), also called Su Dongpo, was a great writer of the Northern Song. He was brilliant at poems, lyrics, prose, calligraphy and painting. His lyrics are often bold and grand, but he could also write in a soft and delicate way. He wrote this one while banished to Huangzhou, years when he thought a great deal about time and life.

苏轼（1037—1101），号东坡居士，北宋大文学家，诗、词、文章、书法、绘画样样都好。他的词常常豪放大气，但也能写得细腻柔美。这首词写于他被贬到黄州的时候，那几年他想了很多关于时间和人生的事。

The mood意境

This lyric is like a quiet little film of a summer night. First a close-up: the lady is pure as ice and jade, cool and free of sweat, and the scent of lotus drifts through the hall by the water. The camera moves to the curtain, where the moon peeks in like a playful child. Then the two walk hand in hand into the courtyard. There is no sound at all; they only see stars slowly crossing the Milky Way. They ask how late it is. The moonlight is pale, the stars are low. The last two lines suddenly speak a truth. On hot days everyone longs for the autumn wind to come, never noticing that, while they wait, another year slips by and they grow older. It moves from coolness to a sigh, a beautiful scene with a light touch of sadness.
