Background

We no longer know when or where this lyric was written. It is usually read as one Liu Yong wrote while wandering far from home, missing someone he loved. The modern scholar Wang Guowei wrote that great work and great learning pass through three stages. He used the last two lines for the second stage: never regretting the hardship of chasing your goal.

The poet作者

Liu Yong was a Northern Song ci poet. His first name was Sanbian, and since he was the seventh child he was also called Liu the Seventh. Sources disagree on when he was born and died. He failed the imperial exam many times and spent years wandering, often in the company of street musicians and singers. He was good at long, slow lyrics, and they spread everywhere. People said that wherever there was a well to drink from, someone could sing a lyric by Liu Yong.

The mood意境

In the first stanza a man stands on a high tower. The breeze is gentle. He stands there a long time, gazing into the distance, and his sorrow seems to rise slowly from the edge of the sky. The setting sun lights the grass and the haze. It is beautiful, but he says nothing, because no one understands why he is standing there. In the second stanza he tries to drink and sing his sorrow away, but forced joy has no taste. In the end he simply accepts it. He has grown thin and his sash is loose, and he does not regret it, because she is worth it. All along he never says who he misses. Only in the last line does he name 'her', like solving a riddle. These two lines show a love that will not change, and that is why they became famous for a thousand years.
