Background

This poem is usually dated to around 734, when Li Bai was staying in Luoyang. One spring night, the sound of a flute came from somewhere, playing "Breaking Willow Branches", a tune of parting. Far from home, Li Bai heard it and could not help missing his hometown, so he wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Li Bai (701–762) was a great Tang poet, called the Immortal of Poetry. In his twenties he left his home in Sichuan to travel, and he seldom went back. So he wrote many poems about missing home, such as "Quiet Night Thoughts". Like that poem, this one uses simple words to show a feeling every traveller knows.

The mood意境

The first line asks "from whose house". The flute cannot be seen, only heard, which feels mysterious and calm. In the second line the poet says the sound spreads on the spring wind across all of Luoyang. One flute could never be heard that far. It is an exaggeration, because the music fills the poet's heart, so it seems to fill the whole city. The last two lines name the tune: "Breaking Willow Branches", a song of farewell. The poet does not say "I miss home". He asks "who would not miss home?", turning his own feeling into everyone's, which makes it even more moving.
