Background

This poem is also titled "Song Before the Hall". It is a palace lament, a kind of poem that speaks for women in the palace who have been forgotten. It uses a story from the Han dynasty. Emperor Wu of Han saw a singing girl named Wei Zifu at Princess Pingyang's house, took her into the palace, and she became his great favorite. Tang poets often used Han stories to write about the Tang court. We cannot tell what year this poem was written.

The poet作者

Wang Changling (c. 698–c. 757), also called Shaobo, was a poet of the High Tang. He was the finest writer of seven-character quatrains, and later readers called him the Master of the Seven-Character Quatrain. He is famous for poems about the frontier, such as "Out to the Frontier". He also wrote many palace laments that show the loneliness and sorrow of women shut inside the palace.

The mood意境

The poem never once uses the word for grievance, yet grievance fills every line. The first two lines show the palace on a spring night: peach blossoms open, the moon rides high, and all is lovely. The third line says a new singing girl has just won the emperor's favor. The fourth line gives a small detail: worried she will be cold, the emperor gives her a brocade robe, which shows how much he cares for her. So who is watching all this? It is usually read as a palace woman who has lost the emperor's favor. She stands outside the curtain and watches someone else being loved, while she stands alone in the spring chill. The warmer things are inside, the colder she feels. The poet only writes about the other woman's good fortune and lets us feel the onlooker's heartache for ourselves.
