Background创作背景

Ouyang Xiu loved the West Lake of Yingzhou (today's Fuyang, Anhui). He had served there as an official when younger and wanted to spend his old age there. In 1071 he retired and moved to Yingzhou. He wrote ten lyrics to the tune Cai Sang Zi. The first line of each ends with "West Lake is lovely", and each praises the lake at a different time. They are usually thought to be written in his last years in Yingzhou. This is the first of the ten.

欧阳修很喜欢颍州（今安徽阜阳）的西湖。他早年在颍州做过官，就想以后在这里养老。宋神宗熙宁四年（1071年），他辞官退休，住到颍州。他写了十首《采桑子》，每首第一句都以“西湖好”结尾，夸西湖不同时候的美景。一般认为这组词是他晚年在颍州写的，这是第一首。

The poet作者

Ouyang Xiu (1007–1072), called the Old Drunkard and later the Retired Scholar Six-One, was a Northern Song writer and one of the Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song. He held high office and helped many young talents, such as Su Shi. His lyrics are fresh and natural, often about scenery and everyday feelings. In old age he lived quietly in Yingzhou, and this poem carries that calm, easy mood.

欧阳修（1007—1072），号醉翁，晚年又号六一居士，北宋文学家，“唐宋八大家”之一。他做过大官，还提拔过苏轼等很多人才。他的词清新自然，常写山水风景和日常心情。晚年退居颍州，过着悠闲的日子，这首词就带着那种轻松安静的心情。

The mood意境

This lyric is like a camera moving slowly. The first stanza shows the wide view: the little boat, the green water, the grassy bank, and music drifting from far away. It is lively but relaxed. The second stanza comes close, and grows quieter and quieter. There is no wind. The water is smooth as glass, and you cannot feel the boat move. Only a few ripples spread from the boat and startle some birds, which fly off along the shore. That one startle and flight makes the still picture move for a moment, and the lake seems even calmer. As you read, picture yourself sitting in the boat, drifting slowly.
