Background

When Huang Chao was young, he went to Chang'an to take the imperial exam and failed. "Bu di" means failing the exam. The story goes that he wrote this poem afterward, using the chrysanthemum to speak his mind. The poem was recorded in later books, and the exact year is not known. Later Huang Chao led a huge uprising at the end of the Tang, and in 880 his army took Chang'an.

The poet作者

Huang Chao (died 884) lived at the end of the Tang. His family traded in salt without a license. He studied and took the imperial exam several times, but never passed. Later he rose up against the Tang and led a peasant army that took Luoyang and Chang'an, where he declared himself emperor. Few of his poems survive, but each one is full of daring.

The mood意境

Most poems about the chrysanthemum call it quiet and pure, like a hermit. This poem is completely different. Here the flower is like a general. It waits until the ninth month to bloom, but when it does, all the other flowers are beaten. The last two lines are even bolder. Its scent charges up to the sky and into Chang'an like an army, and the flowers fill the city like soldiers in golden armor. Picture the whole city turning gold, with the scent rushing at you. The poet has failed the exam, yet he does not lose heart. Instead he speaks of a dream to change the whole world.
