How to read it读音

贳shì: This character is read shì. It means to buy on credit; here, to pawn something for wine.“贳”读 shì，意思是赊欠，这里指拿东西抵押换酒。
参cēn: Cēn cī means uneven, of different heights.“参差”读 cēn cī，意思是长短高低不齐。
角jiǎo: Here it is read jiǎo: a pillow decorated with horn.“角枕”的“角”读 jiǎo，指用兽角装饰的枕头。
尽jìn: Here it is read jìn, meaning all, entirely.“尽”在这里读 jìn，意思是全、都。

Background创作背景

This ci shows a woman in late spring, missing a lover far away. The first stanza shows her weary and sad, then remembering how they first met and fell in love. The second shows how lonely she is now. There is no reliable record of when or for whom it was written. It was included in the anthology Three Hundred Song Ci, compiled by the scholar Zhu Zumou in the early twentieth century.

这首词写一位女子在暮春时节思念远方的恋人。上半首写她慵懒发愁，又回忆两人初见和相爱的情景；下半首写如今的孤单。词写于何时、为谁而写，都没有可靠的记载。它被收进了近代学者朱祖谋编选的《宋词三百首》。

The poet作者

Lü Weilao, also written Lü Binlao, came from Jiaxing in today's Zhejiang. His birth and death years are unknown; he lived around the end of the Northern Song and the start of the Southern Song. Little is recorded about his life. His collection is called Shengqiu Ci. Most of his ci are about lovers missing each other, in clear, graceful language; some also touch on the country's troubles.

吕渭老，一作吕滨老，字圣求，嘉兴（今属浙江）人，生卒年不详，大约生活在北宋末到南宋初。他的生平留下的记载很少，有词集《圣求词》。他的词多写男女相思，语言清丽，有的也写到国家的危难。

The mood意境

This ci reads like a woman's diary. It opens on a late-spring day. The tower is quiet, and she has no heart even to dress up. One birdcall stirs up all her sorrow. Then she opens her memories. They glanced at each other through the misty flowers. Later they wrote poems on a pillow, pawned a hairpin for wine, got drunk in a deep courtyard, and held hands under the walkway, with flowers bright and the moon full. The clearer these sweet pictures are, the harder the present feels. Evening rain falls, even the bees and butterflies seem sad, and she can only stare at the banana leaves and play the zheng in silence, her tears falling on its bridges. The last line is the best: she grows thinner and thinner, while her heart floats away with the willow fluff, toward the one she misses.
