Background

Grand Defender Fang was Fang Guan, a prime minister under Emperor Suzong. In 757 he was removed from office. Du Fu wrote to the emperor to defend him, which made Suzong angry. Du Fu was nearly punished, and later he too was sent away from court. In 763 Fang Guan died of illness in Langzhou, today's Langzhong in Sichuan, and was given the title Grand Defender after his death. The next year, 764, Du Fu was about to leave Langzhou. He came to Fang's tomb to say goodbye and wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, often called the Sage of Poetry. He was deeply loyal to his friends. Speaking up for Fang Guan cost him his career at court, but he never regretted it. After Fang died, Du Fu wrote several poems to mourn and remember him. This one was written while saying goodbye at his tomb.

The mood意境

The poem begins with Du Fu wandering far from home, about to set off again. Before leaving, he stops his horse to bid farewell to his old friend's lonely grave. The lines about no dry earth and broken clouds are famous. His tears soak the ground, the sky hangs low and the clouds are torn apart, as if heaven and earth shared his grief. Then come two old stories. Xie An playing his calm board game shows Fang Guan's greatness as a minister. Ji Zha hanging his sword shows Du Fu's loyalty, which does not end even with death. At the end he says nothing more. He only shows flowers falling and orioles singing. Everything is so quiet that the falling petals and birdsong make it feel even lonelier. The sorrow is not spoken in full. It stays behind in the spring woods.
