Background

This ci is about returning to an old place and missing someone. The poet once rode his horse to a house south of a street and lingered there, where someone he loved lived. Later he comes back. The flowers are still there and so is the screen, but she is gone. The last line borrows the idea of the Tang poet Cui Hu's line, "where has that face gone?" The ci does not say when it was written or whom he missed, and we cannot tell now.

The poet作者

Yan Jidao (about 1038 – about 1110), also called Xiaoshan, was the youngest son of Yan Shu, a chief minister and famous ci poet, so people called him Little Yan. His family later declined, and he held only small posts all his life. He was proud and aloof. His collection, Xiaoshan Ci, is full of memories and longing, in clear, lovely words and with deep feeling.

The mood意境

The first stanza is a spring street. The green trees south of the street shed so many catkins that they cover the spring paths like snow. Blossoms glow on the treetops, mixed with bright clouds, and below the trees stands a house with red gates. He idly climbs the north tower, rolls up the blinds, and sees those trees across the street at once. The second stanza turns to memory. He leans on the railing for a long time and still does not want to go. He cannot tell how many rainy dusks have passed like this. He recalls riding his horse over green moss one late spring, and stopping deep in the shade. Now the fallen flowers are still there, and the fragrant screen stands closed and empty, but where is she? The scene is the same and the person is gone. Under the quiet words lies a deep sense of loss.
