The corpus text has only the first two lines; the rest is missing and is restored here from the common text. The corpus title files it under miscellaneous song lyrics; textbooks usually call it "Yi Jiangnan". It is the first of three.

Background

Bai Juyi visited the south when he was young. Later he served as prefect, the head of a region, first in Hangzhou and then in Suzhou. He loved the hills and waters of the south. In old age he lived in Luoyang. Remembering the beauty of the south, he wrote three lyrics called "Yi Jiangnan". This is the first. It is usually dated to around 838, when he was already in his sixties.

The poet作者

Bai Juyi (772–846), also called Letian, was a great Tang poet. He liked to write in plain words; it is said that even an old woman who could not read could understand his poems. He was also one of the first poets to write lyrics set to tunes. This "Yi Jiangnan" is short, clear and very beautiful.

The mood意境

This little lyric has only twenty-seven characters. The first line simply calls out: "The south is lovely!" It is like someone who smiles the moment he thinks of a place he loves. The second line says he knew this scenery well long ago, so he is not repeating what others said; he saw it himself. The middle two lines paint the brightest picture: the morning sun on riverside flowers, red as fire, and the spring river so green it is almost blue. Red next to green is bright and lively. The last line ends with a question, "How could I not miss the south?" Everyone knows the answer: of course he does! As you read, close your eyes and imagine the colors of a spring morning in the south.
