Background

The title says this records a dream and was sent to his friend Shi Bohun. Shi Bohun was a learned hermit from Meishan in Sichuan who got on very well with Lu You. The poem is usually dated to the years when Lu You served in Sichuan, about 1172 to 1178. Much of the north was then held by the Jin state. Lu You longed to win it back but never got the chance to fight, so he could only ride to the frontier in his dreams.

The poet作者

Lu You (1125 to 1210), also called Fangweng, was a great Southern Song poet. His greatest wish was to drive out the Jin armies and win back the north. He once served at the front in Nanzheng, the days he never forgot, but he was soon sent away. Afterward he wrote many poems about dreaming of army life and riding at the frontier, and this is one of them.

The mood意境

The first half is all dream, and it opens with great force. On a snowy dawn reed pipes sound everywhere, and ranks of armored cavalry move silently, like flowing water. Their silence shows strict order and great strength more than any noise could. The poet does not know where he is. He only guesses: west of Yanmen Pass, by Qinghai Lake, where soldiers of old won glory. The second half is waking, and the picture turns cold at once: a cold lamp, a silent water clock, the slanting moon on the paper window. From a stirring battlefield back to a bare room, the drop is huge. At the end he says he long ago vowed to win glory far away. His hair may be gray, but his heart is not dead. The last six characters say everything about an old man who refuses to give up on serving his country.
