Background

When Li Bai was young he travelled along the Yangtze. One night he moored his boat below Niuzhu Mountain. This was the very place where Xie Shang of the Eastern Jin had once heard Yuan Hong reciting poems. Yuan Hong was poor and made a living hauling goods. Because Xie Shang valued him, he later became an official and grew famous. Li Bai thought of this story. He felt he had talent too, but no one to recognise it, so he wrote this poem. Sources disagree on the exact year.

The poet作者

Li Bai (701–762) was a great Tang poet, called the Immortal of Poetry. He was bold and sure of his own talent, and longed for someone to see it so he could do great things. But for most of his life he did not get his chance. In his last years he often lived around Dangtu, near Niuzhu, and he died there.

The mood意境

The first two lines paint the night: the river, the moonlight, and a sky without a single cloud, clean and wide open. Then the poet steps up to look at the moon and suddenly remembers a story from hundreds of years before. On a moonlit night right here, a general heard a poor scholar reciting poems, and the two became true friends. The poet says, "I can recite poems too, but there is no one like him anymore." There is pride here, and loneliness too. The last two lines stop talking about feelings. They only say he will leave tomorrow, and the maple leaves fall thick along the shore. The autumn leaves are like the sadness he cannot put into words. Though it is a regulated poem, its middle lines skip the usual matched pairs, so it reads as smoothly as talking.
