How to read it读音

钿diàn: In diàn hé, a jewel box inlaid with gold, this character is read diàn.“钿合”是镶着金花的首饰盒，“钿”读 diàn。
为wèi: In wèi gē, to sing for them, this character is read wèi.“为歌”是替他们唱，“为”读 wèi。
朝zhāo: Here this character means morning and is read zhāo.“朝”在这里是早晨，读 zhāo。

Background创作背景

Two trees are called lianli when their branches grow together. People of old used them as a picture of a loving couple. This ci is about two crabapple trees joined in this way. It draws on many stories of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his beloved Yang Guifei. Legend says the emperor once compared the sleepy Yang Guifei to a crabapple flower, and Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Regret" tells of their love. We do not know when or where this ci was written. Some think it also hides the poet's longing for a lost love of his own.

“连理”是说两棵树的枝干长到了一起，古人拿它比喻相爱的夫妻。这首词写的是两棵连在一起的海棠花。词里用了很多唐玄宗和杨贵妃的故事：传说唐玄宗曾把醉后没睡醒的杨贵妃比作海棠，白居易的《长恨歌》也写了他们的爱情。这首词写于何时何地，已经说不清。一说词里也藏着作者对自己旧日恋人的怀念。

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 – about 1260), also called Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He never held office and spent many years as an adviser in other men's households. His ci use rich, ornate words and hide their meaning deep. He often jumps from image to image, so his lines feel like a string of bright pictures and can be hard to follow.

吴文英（约1200—约1260），号梦窗，四明（今浙江宁波）人。他一生没有做官，长期在别人家里做幕客。他的词用字华丽，意思藏得很深，常常一句接一句地跳着写，读起来像一串串彩色的画面，比较难懂。

The mood意境

The first stanza is about the flowers. The shade is like an embroidered tent, and the joined trunks stand like a pair of mandarin ducks. The red blossoms are thick, and leaves like clouds bend low to shelter them. Root leans on root and twig joins twig, like the two halves of a jewel box, so that even the beauty behind the screen feels jealous. In the east wind the branches twine like a sleeper who has slept enough. At night people light candles to shine on the flowers, and the lonely moon is too shy to pass by. The second stanza turns to Yang Guifei. She bathed at Huaqing, her hair lay side by side with the emperor's, and their hearts were tied in one knot. That was when she was most loved. But who will sing the Song of Everlasting Regret? In a dark hall on an autumn night they whispered a vow never to part. The last line, "red at dawn, green at dusk", wishes the trees to stay together like red flowers by morning and green leaves by evening, for ever. The whole ci turns two trees into a pair of lovers. It is beautiful, with a touch of sadness.
