How to read it读音

别bié
Read bié. Bié zhī is usually explained as a branch that sticks out to the side. Another reading takes bié as 'to leave': the magpie, startled by the moonlight, flies off the branch.“别枝”的“别”读 bié。
Textbooks read this jiàn, 'to see'. Some read it xiàn, the old form of 'to appear'.“忽见”的“见”课本读 jiàn,意思是看见。

Background

In 1181 Xin Qiji was removed from office. He went to live at Daihu Lake in Shangrao, in today's Jiangxi, and stayed for about ten years. Huangsha Ridge lay west of Shangrao, on a road he often took. It is usually thought that he wrote this lyric during those years, on a summer night as he walked along the Huangsha road.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), styled Youan and known as Jiaxuan, was a great ci writer of the Southern Song. He was born in the north, which the Jin had taken over. As a young man he led troops against the Jin, then came south hoping to win the lost land back, but he was removed from office again and again. Most of his lyrics are bold and stirring. Yet while living in the countryside he also wrote fresh poems about farm life, and this is the most famous of them.

The mood意境

This lyric is like a short film of a night walk. It opens with light and sound: the moon comes out and a magpie flutters up; a breeze blows and the cicadas sing. Then come smell and sound: the rice flowers are fragrant and frogs croak everywhere, as if they too are happy about the harvest. In the second half the weather turns. There are fewer stars, a few drops of rain fall before the hills, and the walker starts to hurry, looking for shelter. Just then the road bends past a little bridge, and the familiar thatched inn suddenly appears. Readers can feel that moment of happy surprise. The lyric never uses the word 'joy', yet every line shows love for the harvest and for country life.
