The original title is "Two Untitled Poems"; this is the first. The corpus has the wrong character for fu in she fu, a slip from the machine conversion; the game is she fu, guessing a hidden object. The corpus ends with lei duan peng (like broken tumbleweed); most common editions read lei zhuan peng (like turning tumbleweed). The meaning is almost the same: a weed blown about by the wind.

Background

This poem is about a party one night. At the party the poet saw someone he loved. They sat apart and could not talk, yet they understood each other. Early the next morning, he had to go to work again. The poem says he rode to lan tai, the Palace Library office, so it is usually thought he wrote it while working there. One view dates it to around 839. No one knows who the person in the poem was.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813 to about 858) was a poet of the late Tang. He and Du Mu are called the Little Li and Du. All his life he was caught between quarreling groups at court, and his career went badly. He wrote many poems called "Untitled" about love and longing. They are beautiful and misty, and people often cannot be sure what they really mean.

06

The mood意境

The poem opens by repeating "last night", as if the poet is going over that evening again and again: the stars, the breeze, the painted hall, the cassia hall are still before his eyes. The second couplet is the most famous. His body cannot fly to the other person like a phoenix, but their hearts are already joined. One line says "cannot", the other says "can", and together they are bitter and sweet. The third couplet shows the lively games at the party, the warm wine and red candles. The livelier the party, the lonelier it feels that the two cannot speak. The last couplet drops back to real life. When the drum sounds, he must ride off to work, like a tumbleweed rolled about by the wind, with no control over his life. A lovely memory next to a life he cannot change leaves the reader with an aching heart.
